  2. “Past is a history, and it must not be forgotten for it is a part of our lives, wherein we can get lessons and broad learning”. This is true to every people’s life just like the one of the prominent Filipino writers, Jose Dalisay, who himself had experienced a different thing which he made in his own life story “In the Garden”. This story is based on his past experiences during Martial Law wherein there were lots of authorities whom were making foolishness as they want to do so. There is also a one scene in the story that the authorities destroyed the garden of the innocent people and doing harassments to them. That is just one of the anomalies that the authorities are doing those helpless times of the Philippines and that Jose Dalisay wants to share for us to be enlightened. It is obvious that until now, it is still happening in our society and that we must always be ready and if we are given a chance to change the system, do it first to yourself.

  4. The story features the life of the people in barrios.Their way of living and the things that gave pleasures to them. It also shows the situation of people were rebels usually exist. I don't like the story because events were not clearly shown. The wrong their is that soldiers were taking actions without a valid reason. I am asking why they should kill those plants in the garden were in fact it hasn't any connection to the criminals.

  5. This is a time when weare under the rule of Ferdinand Marcos with his martial law imposed. In the story, the soldiers damaged the belongings of the people specially the garden. At that time all are under the military rule of Ferdinand Marcos that no one can have the confidence to argue with him.Even militaries can't have the power. The story only states the life they have when they are under the time of Martial Law wher every step and evey word they will say and do are watched by people assigned by Ferdinand Marcos, the hardships they've got and the struggle for freedom they want to have.

  6. The sorrow of yesterday is a lesson to fight today and an inspiration for tomorrow's next generation. It is overwhelming that the author shared his experience during martial law under military rule.Though a lot of Filipinos suffered during that time,it did not hinder him to portray the brutality during the administration of Ferdinand Marcos. However,I was disappointed knowing that we are in a democratic country yet during the time of martial law everything was under control. This experience of the author inspires and makes me realize that we should fight for what is right because we are not deaf and blind to take for granted what is happening in our surroundings.

  7. The story In the garden was written by Jose Y. Dalisay. This story was written during the time of Marcos and we all know that in the time of Marcos it was a tragic for all filipinos and the time of martial law wherein we ruled by militaries. In the story the people in the barrios was harassed by the soldiers because the soldier think that the people in the barrio killed one of their co soldier, the soldier destroyed the garden of the people. In this scene of the story reflects the real senario during the martial law, there are many anomalies that the authorities do and that was the reason of the author to write this kind of story because he wants to know all filipinos about what was happening during martial law.He was imprisoned when he write this story. The lesson of this story is that we must fight for our rights and 2nd is we don't have to be a barbaric person to be known,we can never hurt the feelings of other person instead be kind and helpful to them to be a good citizen.

  8. The story has a connection on what the author -Jose Dalisay experienced during the time of Martial law. In that story , Jose Dalisay illustrate to us one scenario wherein it shows the brutality and the power of soldiers at that time. During that era the Filipino mass has no voice, they don't have the chance to speak & be heard by the government. It shows how the soldiers kills & harassed anyone eventhough they were not the suspect /did not do anything wrong . But eventhough that's the situation, they can't do nothing because the soldiers were powerful than them. Generally, the author was able to relate to us-new generation on how the Filipino's-teacher's, & ordinary people & even schools & other institution suffer at the Marcos regime(the time of martial law).

  9. The story entitled "In The Garden" shows the events that occurred during the time of martial law.It clearly portrays the cruelty and the abusiveness of the soldiers under Ferdinand Marcos regime. At that time,Filipinos almost became slaves because their rights are taken away from them. The public suffered so much because even though they are innocent, most of them are punished because of false accusations. From that story,I really appreciated the value of freedom and human rights. That, it is not really easy to live in a country where you live like a criminal-no freedom and no right.

  10. "Our things need washing. If she can draw water she can do wash for us. It's the least she can do to help her people." The sergeant sniffed his armpit and snorted.

Of the lines above, in the story "In the Garden",of Jose Dalisay, shows the abusiveness of the soldiers during martial law. Their harshness of treating someone, especilly Rosita in the story, who have been requested to work for them. That in the first place, if they will take revenge for the incident happened, then, why such that they need to stepped the right of others,in fact,Rosita is a student and not a criminal to be punished.
Where is the justice for destructing the garden of the class?? Are they involve of the crime happened?? Of course not, now,if they want revenge, they should fight face to face, one by one, neglecting those who are not involve.

  11. The story "In the garden" shows that the filipino survive the torture of the soldiers. There's no freedom in that time. In the story that the country have no human rights or freedom. Filipino suffer a very brutal situation like no food to eat. Only soldiers have a power to teach what the filipino want to do. We the filipino relate what happened past years ago about the martial law. The soldiers treat a very harsh thing in the generation of the filipino. The writer wrote the story to know how much important the filipino is. And now our generation says that "Filipino is worth dying for"

  12. The events that happened in this story is a reflection of what happened during the time of Marcos. The harassment that was experienced by the characters from the hand of the soldiers. They destroy their garden because they thought that their co-soldier was killed by the people living in that place. Because of that wrong accusation or "maling akala" in tagalog, people in that place suffered so much.

  13. Jose Dalisay's "In The Garden" shows the brutality of the leaders in our country during the time of Martial Law under the former president Ferdinand Marcos. The author had depicted the real scenario during those times. In the story, the soldiers didn't even thought of the consequences that will occur because of their different actions. They have also didn't consider the innocent people around them. They have just did whatever they wanted. Its as if they own every single thing they see.Its time for us to wake up and face the reality that we should have equal treatment and rights for we are now a democratic country.Freedom and Liberty!

  14. Base on my observation in this story the writer compared his past experience before during the martial law. In the garden story is very related to the history of our country, because as we heard before that there was a war, encountered by us Filipino , which is some soldiers are died because they fight for our right in order for us to commit freedom. And i like the way of writing of the author because he implement us that were lucky to have that freedom.

  15. "In The Garden" is a story that manifest vengeance. I find it astonishing; However, it took time for me to grasp the message which Jose Dalisay is trying to impart. One must read the story from the very first event until the last line so as to understand its meaning. As I perceive the turn of events of this piece of art, I believe that it is still possible for this story to come into reality nowadays. Furthermore, I would say that Jose Dalisay had once again, proven his superb literary skills through his masterpiece.

  16. Weaknesses can make our life different. Sometimes you feel you just cant do what you want to do,because your weaknesses prevent you from accomplishing them.In the story, we know that characters eat their own weaknesses, because as soldier's came in thier schoolhouse garden they are just like a servant which they need to follow the soldier's mandate for them. This incident happened during the time of Marcos that Filipino has no right and freedom to do what they want.I can't understand also why soldier's were picking the garden clean of it's vegetables and etc. Frankly, I dont like the story "IN THE GARDEN".This is because the ending of the story is hanging, and there are few of situation which I couldn't understand.

  17. Jose Dalisay wrote the story "In The Garden" during the time of Martial Law, where Ferdinand Marcos was our President. At that time the Filipinos experience a hard life. As we all know, Ferdinand Marcos was a dictator as well as his colleagues. In the story, Jose Dalisay was able to portray the real happenings in our country during his regime. He shows here the harshness of the soldiers to the people by destroying their garden even though they did not do anything wrong. This just shows the government during Marcos times, harsh and cruel.

  18. The story ''In the Garden''is about the previous situation happened in our country. There are people who are powerful and can destroy the life of others if they were not followed. Those times, the brutality showed by the author in the story and how hard their situation in the hands of soldiers. Martial law times affect the life of Filipinos and made them slaves just like the story wherein the garden is being destroyed by the soldiers. Since the Filipinos those times are innocent, they don't have any choice but to followed the things that the leaders want them to do.

  19. The story based on the Martial Law happened so many years ago and it shows how hard to lived without freedom. The author connect the story about the brutality and dominance of the leaders during that time. In the garden, the soldiers are taking advantage with their position. The Filipinos suffered and became slaves for them to live and stay in their place. It's very hard to let those people do their wants which is not good and in fact we need to fight for our rights.

  20. In the story of JOSE DALISAY entitled "IN THE GARDEN" it really shows the brutality of the leaders to the people. They shows abusiveness especially in the time of ex- President Marcos that the government really used their power in the wrong way. Instead they help people, they used their force in the wrong way which was to make people under them. Lastly they treating people as their slave under their institution, I hope that there should always equal in treating people in terms of government.

  21. Revenge is the solution of a group or someone who had lost one of their companion. This happens in the story of "In The Garden" which the soldiers want a revenge because they lost their co-soldier. It shows how brutal and powerful the soldiers are which really happens in real scenario during the martial law. It is very hard for the people which is affected to adjust this kind of behavior like the characters in the story: the students and the teacher. I found out in the story that even though it was very cruel and brutal at first but they set the situation peacefully afterward by having a peace talk. It is much better by doing that kind of way to achieve a peaceful world than exerting human force and using weapons. Therefore we have to respect our fellowmen so that we cannot experience the brutality during martial law and we can live peacefully.

  22. The story pictures the situation yesteryear's during the time of Marcos. It really shows how powerful the soldiers are before. It is also real for our ancestors experience it before like the characters in the story. They used their forces and to harm people and also to destroy the property of other people like the garden in the story. It was not good story for it does not shows the rights of people and they treat them like a slave. I hope it wont happen again.

  23. The story told us about what is happening to us people who have no power to express our feelings. It is because we are under of the abusive government that suffers us. They use us force to give what they want. But some people are brave that they still fight the abusive government for the sake of their freedom. As of today's generation, this is still happening but it is minimized.

  24. I understand the reason why the author wrote the short story entitled "In the Garden". In the story it show how the civilians treated by the soldiers in the time of martial law, they want to revenge because they lost their co-soldiers. They accused the people of such particular place which they think their enemies go to that place to get food by that the soldier do was they destroyed all the livelihood of the people and family . The story shows the brutal treatment of the soldiers during that time, they used their powers in their positions to accused people who they think against them even though that persons are innocent. I think the author wrote the story because he want to share to us what he experience and what he noticed that time of martial law. He want to features to our mind how the life of each of the family who are very affected of that situation. It really sad to know that war came from wrong accusation and misunderstanding of what they believe. In realization its still happens nowadays but its not like before hope it wont happen again.

  25. The event in this short story that written by Jose Dalisay was reflected to the real scenario that happen in time of Marcos. It portraits how people being punished by the wrong leadership. It portraits the brutal treatment of soldiers to those people who have no power to fight them. During the Marcos period we can observe here how people being suffered by a different treatment of those people who are in high position. That'swhy each of us now a days was still find the proper justice for us in order to live in this kind of economy peacefully.

  26. The story "IN THE GARDEN" written by Jose Dalisay,it reflects the real scenario about what was happening during the MARTIAL lAW.The brutality and the unjustice system reign by Marcos, through the Filipino to suffer many years. The story IN THE GARDEN the soldiers destroyed the garden of the people in the barrio because they thought that the people killed one of their co-soldiers.In this kind of scenario it reflects the martial law, which was being unjustice by the authorities.Living in the country without freedom is like torturing or killing your self.

  27. This Story entitled "IN THE GARDEN" by:Jose Dalisay.Actually this kind of story is really not good and it obviously connected with the martial law just like what happen in the past generation.for me as a Filipino citizen I will never accept this situation that will happen in my whole life or in my Family because i love them so much just like what I did in my self.Every person has it's own path that he/she can easily find a real place in the whole life. But all of this problem is absolutely natural, and normal, we are not human if there's no problem because life is full of problem specially if we are still alive in this bountiful world. And all the things that we can capture the problem is to pray.

  28. They say that "History repeats itself" but the story In The Garden gives me information for not allowing past events happened again for this will become our motivations to do for the better, to fight for what is right and to fight of what we become. I idolized the writer which is Jose Dalisay for he was brave enough to vocalized in a way of writing what he was experiencing during Marcos regime, knowing that we are a democratic country yet we still ruled by his administration.
