  1. I'm thankful the author exposed this kind of story because it states the reality of life that some of our co-Filipinos indulged in rituals. I have realized that rituals are still present today. It gives me the idea that Filipinos are still adapting and doing rituals which are done by our ancestors though we are now on modern times. It is a fact that some are depending their lives on rituals just like in the story and I also got the realization that life is at risk when joining rituals. You may not know the consequence after it. Its a matter of choice whether you will take it or leave it.

  2. It is good for us to know the story of Nick Joaquin which is entitled "THE SUMMER SOLSTICE". In the story,we will understand how people depend their life towards rituals and its part of their culture. I have realized that mostly of the people may prefer rituals as a means of solutions to their problems because in some ways rituals give good benefits to them. For now, rituals are considered as superstitious belief because not everyone follow it now. There are times rituals are the means of curing illness mostly accepted by people in the boondocks but now these are ignored by people in this modern world.

  3. I appreciate Nick Joaquin as a portrait of the artist as a Filipino even he did not pursue his high school degree. He always prefer unusual, dramatic, and extraordinary in terms of his writings. Instead of being a paradox, he used his ability of being realist and romanticist. One of his writing is the story of "THE SUMMER SOLSTICE". The unusual is usual in this writing. This story portrays the tensions between human nature, passion, and discipline as experienced by a woman. It is conventional but still radical in treatment. This story is very inspiring particularly to those old woman who needs an appreciation of others specially to those young man. It is very encouraging and interesting story. That's why we need to give respect, importance, love, care or whatever they needs of even though they are older than as what stage we belong right now what's the important is we still care about them. I salute Nick Joaquin for making me being inspired of him. He is very realistic and humanistic in terms of it.

  4. As I've read the story of Nick Joaquin, the SUMMER SOLSTICE, I've realized something that we Filipinos believe in different beliefs as an influence of our culture here in our country, example of it is the feast of Saint John, were women are participating in such rituals were they are naked and said to be posses by the spirit of Saint John and they became out of their mind. This is one example that people still believe in such things, even thou now a days people are not very active in doing such rituals and also we must not forbid someone to believe or to join in such rituals because it his/her right.

  7. Honestly,I don't like the characters of the story because they were bold and not normal. I don't like also the character of Guido for his lacked of respect and strong desire to Lupeng though the latter was already a married woman. For me, it's not a good influence especially to the young readers because of it's worldly craving of sex which is not good. Being paradox of the author wondered me, how could he write this kind of stories behind of his being religious? It's ridiculous and difinetely unbelievable!Anyway, the story was still interesting since it portrayed how men were superior and women were threated like a slave but because of their rituals called "Tadtarin" everything had changed and women learned to stand with their own.

  8. The story of Nick Joaquin "THE SUMMER SOLSTICE"is really appreciated, because it makes me realized that the belief of our ancestor can be apply in our generation today.the summer solstice talks about the woman who's not appreciated by his husband and wanted to join the saint john's day. the story give me an idea that love and care must be present in the family specially to the couple, it must respect both of them.

  9. The Summer Solstice shows the unequal treatment between man and woman. Man is superior than woman,as what the midddle of the story tried to emphasize. As a woman,it aroused the feelings of mine to fight what are my rights. it made me realized that woman should be given an opportunity to do and decide for herself. The ending of the story inspired me so much because i discovered that man cant dominate woman all the time.Even how brutal and cruel they are, time will come they become weak and follow what are the womans demand.

  10. My reflection about on Nick Joaquin short story which entitled Summer Solstice are these: I learned that not all the time girls are puppy of their husband or in tagalog "sunod-sunuran".In the story especially in the ending the husband of Dona Lupeng knee her and vow her during the celebration of St. Jhon's Day.
In the author, I learned that he is very particular on the religion and also his works are all about the differences of girls from the boys.

  11. In my odservation about the author, he wrote this story because of realism. It's true because some of the couples today are not doing such thing as a good couple did. in this story, we can see the loneliness of the wife because her husband did not gave her satisfaction. I've learned that,as a man, we are oblige to do the responsibility by satisfying our women. In other words, we should understand their feelings. Because as a man, i can't live without woman.

  12. Nick Joaquin is such a very good author. In his story entitled "The Summer Solstice" it was such a nice story about the rituals and about the beliefs of the people in that story. In what I had reflect is that these kind of rituals do really exist. It shows that how the people believed on those rituals. Somehow I realize maybe this rituals and beliefs may come true. And what I have red in that story, women should be appreciate by the men and women are still a human that should be notice by.

  13. Nick Joaquin is a dramatic writer, especially in his Summer Solstice. The story is all about family. The most exciting part is when Don Paing kiss the feet of Dona Luping. I think the story can't be true in our real life. Because the attitude of the characters in the story are different in our generation now.

  14. The story was all about a" woman sadistically subduing her husband to her will".I did like very much the story in the sense that in the story we-women rule over men.Nick Joaquin portrays or have shown their:that women could be superior to men.I like the scene wherein Doña Lupeng was able to made Don Paeng crawl on the floor as what she wanted him to do.Because we all know(those who read the story)what kind of a husband Don Paeng is, he was a highly moral person. He wants all the time that his rules/decision would be follow. And with that scene , its only a proof that not all the time in a woman's life they could live in the shadow of their husband or could be inferior/under by man.
Generally, I view the story as a victory of women!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. The story of Nick Joaquin"summer solstice", shows that women is not always beyond by men, they can also be as powerful as what men can do.The story mainly characterized by Don Paeng and Donya Lupeng, in where from the start Donya Lupeng was rule-over by the hand of his husband, that she can do nothing without her husband's permission. But, during St. John feast, everything was changed as Donya Lupeng broke the condition. She joined the celebration without her husband's mind. When she came home, Don Paeng's anger didn't exist instead, he crawl like an agonized lizard on the floor and kissed Donya Lupeng's feet.
"The wheel is turning",if today you're at the bottom maybe tomorrow, lucky you are the top.The women now in the story will soon take overs men's rule.

  16. I have read the story of Nick Joaquin entitled "Summer Solstice", at first doña lupeng should not do anything without his husband's permission but later on doña lupeng disobeyed his husband when she joined the St. John festivity and when she came home don paeng, who doña lupeng had disobeyed crawled like a lizard and starting to kiss doña lupeng's feet.
It shows that not all the time men are superior to women and not all the time men can treat women according to their will.

  17. The story of Nick Joaquin which is the Summer Solstice made me realize that there were traditions that our country still follow. He was a good writer for he can make his readers understand what his writings all about, but I guessed his not so good in terms of equality. Women were in the lower rank unlike the men which is superior. It gave also lesson to the men that it's not all the time that the men will win,in the end they will still follow women. It felt so good for us women and it's the reality. I'm not so impressed but i highly respect his writings for he gave information about our past events.

  18. For me I don't like the way Nick Joaquin write the story, because in this story which is "Summer Solstice" men are dominant compare to women.I say this, because its hurt for me as a woman, for me,we must have the same status in society. In the story Donya Lupeng Always Follow his Husband, Which is Don Rafael. Donya Lupeng always ask permission to his husband, before she done something, to make her happy. There's a part in the story that i like , this is when the last day of fiesta.Guido arrive from abroad, and he tell that in the place were he come from, women are superior than men, and women are respected by men.The last part of the story is the best part for me, This is the time were Donya Lupeng has a chance to control his husband, the part is when Don Rafael bend his knees and Crawl nd kiss Donya Lupeng's feet.

  19. As what we all observe Nick Joaquin as a writer is realist and romanticist. He really write with passionate but some of his work follows superstitious belief. Why i say so, because as what i noticed to the story title " Summer Solstice" the story portray the real scenario of the life of some couple which is the husband dominated than there wife.Man always think that they are more powerful than girls, that they can do everything what they want, but girls cant do.i don't really agree that thing because i believe that what can man do woman can do also. I learned from that story that not all the time girls needed to compared by guys everyone of us has different ability and motivation in life. Not all the time that in the marriage life the man only satisfied what he wanted it needed the the couple had an equal treatment to each other, to maintain there relationship grow.

  20. Summer Solstice, this story talks about spiritual, how they celebrate the feast of st. john and all of the girl celebrate it. This is the party for the girls only just like Donya Lupeng, she joined this celebration even if Don Paeng wont allow her to join but she disobeyed him. In their era, the boys is dominant than the girls but now both of them is fair. Few women today is powerful than their husband. It was a good story for those couple who descriminate their wife. This is the reality that were facing in our society today.

  21. When i read the story, I was amazed because the story was written by a writer who was a high school drop out. He wrote a short story which was very confusing. Ex. How come Don Paeng easily kneeled and followed what Dona Lupeng said. Even though I was confused but the story was good because it talks about rituals as a part of culture and I realized that not all time men are superior to women.

  22. The story, "The Summer Solstice" was quite unbelievable. It was as if the women who undertook the Tadtarin ceremony were out of their minds. Moreover, it was perfectly defined by Nick Joaquin. He notified the breathtaking activities done by the characters in the story. Indeed, all that had happened was eerie.

  23. One of my favorite filipino author was Nick Joaquin it is because i really like the way he wrote especially in the short story writing we all know that he is really good also in writing a poem, he write also with more sense especially in his short story entitled "SUMMER SOLTICE" as i red the whole story i found out that he really preferred to the women in which one of the character Doña lupeng want to go in the celebration of st. john's day but her husband did not want Doña lupeng to go until such time Doña lupeng go, i really like the ending in which when the boy Don paeng kneel and kissed the feet of her wife Doña lupeng and he said that he really want her wife and he really love her.for me it is not only the male as a head of the family but women can do also. for the author also some of his worked did not basing or connecting in the real life all i can say is that he really good in the way he write a story and has a more sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Base on the story of Nick Joaquin the SUMMER SOLSTICE, it shows that not all the time the men are dominants from women, as shown in the story it shows that during Saint John's Day the women joined the ritual and they became possessed by the spirit of Saint John, and they became dominants from men at this time their husbands bow down to them.

  25. The short story ''The Summer Solstice''was about the culture or beliefs doing by women. Nick Joaquin shows how men dominated women during that time. He is also religious because the setting of the story is during the St. John's Day.It really gives lesson to the reader knowing that his story talks about on how to handle relationship and how to treat women nicely. It gives an idea on how to respect the rights of women especially in terms of their living.

  26. Upon reading the story of Nick Joaquin the "SUMMER SOLSTICE" my first impression is that the story is very bold, but as I go deep in the story I found out that its not really that bad, the story is also related to our culture, because in the story the people, especially women are celebrating the Saint John's Day. And this shows that Filipinos are follows culture.

  27. The story the summer solstice is such an interested story. It shows romanticism. Nick JUAQUIN point out in his writing the summer solstice , that not all the time man dominates. He also showed in the story the religious beliefs of the characters.

  28. Nick Joaqiun really believe on superstition. he was focus on the old belief of the Filipino. Summer solstice was one of his good writing. His story was really related to the Filipino culture. He really relate his writings on his culture, as a Filipino. And this story was being perform during the day of saint John the Baptist.Base on his writings there we can see that he was really a filipino..... writing about the culture of us... the FILIPINO!!!

  29. The author used realism as his symbol in the story. The character of this story shows abnormality where character Don Paeng praise his wife. The story used tadtarin culture where women are proudly shows their body in public.Today's generation, the culture shows malicious to the reader. The whole part of the story was conventional in theme but radical in treatment.

  30. Maybe this story really happened in some places because we have different cultures, traditions and beliefs. Nowadays it is maybe unbelievable but still existing for instances as what we called “KULTO” There is hypnotism happened even, they hypnotized people just to be their follower .
This tradition are not by Christian belief, It is not right to follow. We catholic believers, even if we celebrate fiesta, its only a way of commemorating our Patrons and not the extent that we will worship them because we have only ONE GOD.

  31. I appreciated the way Nick Joaquin presented his story entitled "Summer Solstice" because even if he uses abnormal characters in the story, he had successfully given the thought of what he wanted to portray with. The story portrays the tensions between human nature, passion and discipline, as experienced by a woman. He also gives importance about the rituals as a part of their culture. It reminds us, especially the married couple that not all of the times that men should be superior over women and it was presented there on how ritual change a situation in ones life. Particularly in a marriage life, not only the husband does the decision; but, it's about give and take relationship, sharing ideas and believes. I was also amused the last scene in the story where they're emotional when Don Paeng had realized that Dona Lupeng, his wife, needs his unconditional love and attention and then he bent his knees, crawled and kiss his wife's feet just like an antagonized lizard.

  32. Having initiative, having a talented and genius mind and a sense of writing, thats what Nick Joaquin's gift from above. It's a reality that he did not achieve his studies, but he did prodigious writings and one of that is the short story entitled,"Summer Solstice". The story was being played in the movie " Tatarin" with the characters Lupe (Dina Bonnevie) that showed perfectness as a wife of Paeng (Edu Manzano). Later, Lupe realizes the missing part of her life. What she did was to rebel against her husband by attending to this final rights of Tatarin and expressing her emotions through wild dancing. Later Paeng saw Lupe and he was then realized that he has long been taking for granted by her wife. This movie derivation from Joaquin's story is just a proof that this filipino author Nick Joaquin, really is a great writer.

  33. The Summer Sostice is based on the superstitious beleifs of Amada and the rest of the woman. Nick Joaquin really a good writer because the story impart lesson to the reader. It also gives importance with the relationship of both sexes. I can relate on the story because instead of being a woman, it also proves thatwe are worth it. The story has a moral lesson although the ending is not that happy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. His writings are gentle but brutal just like the Summer Solstice story he wrote. The women in the story or the tadtarin are very brutal. For them, dignity is not important, they didn't give great value on their part.Instead of protecting themselves from brutal situation, they are the one doing that brutality.Joining procession without wearing any clothes is not really easy to do but for them, they didn't care if somebody saw their naked bodies as long as they can celebrate the St.John's feast even in their grotesque image.
The story is not good for students especially the ladies.God bestowed us our holy body to use in a good and desirable manner not for unnecessary acts, which we have to protect from brutality and danger.

  35. As what my understanding in the Nick Joaquin story entitled THE SUMMER SOLSTICE,every time that theirs a festivity, the people in that particular country, they believe in their beliefs and they apply it without hesitation. One of the character of this said story,is a old woman who needs an appreciation of others. That's why, this story makes us being inspired of in terms of giving respect, concern, love or whatever they needs from us. Nick Joaquin, is very inspiring since his writings is very realist and romanticist. He is a very good writer and his stories are amazing.

  36. When I read the short story written by Nick Joaquin entitled "THE SUMMER SOLSTICE" I'm very amaze in order to understand and appreciate. In fact, I learned a lot from this said story. The author states here more about the Filipino ethics and rituals. He is very realistic and humanistic instead of being paradox. His writings is very interesting in terms of those human nature particularly those old woman who needs an appreciation of others.

  37. Nick Joaquin’s work was romanticist and realist. He picks out a critical moment in a person’s life, like in his short story “Summer Solstice”, wherein a woman here sadistically disobeyed her husband for her own will. It also shows lessons to every reader. First, the couple must perfect their love each other. Most importantly, they must respect each other so that relationship will stay longer. It is also stated in the story that women must not be inferior to men and there must be an equal treatment for both of them to have an intimate relationship.

  38. As I read the short story wrote by Nick Joaquin which is the "THE SUMMER SOLSTICE" it was realistic and humanistic. Also it talks about that not all of the time the husband will be a better nor superior in the family. That he is the most powerful and her wife should always obey with him. We cannot deny it that everyone has there own like. In the story, Lupeng did do what she wants although her husband not allowing her to attend celebration where all the girls dancing with a nude body. With this story I learned that love should not be take for granted.

  39. Summer solstice is one of the best short story of Nick Joaquin it is about a husband rejecting hes wife, but when hes wife join the traditional dance that in every year we/they celebrate it is the ST. John's Day..The author want's to tell that in a marriage life both husband and wife must respect each other so that their living will not be complicated...In this case marriage will not last forever..At the ending of the story the husband praise hes wife like a goddess, hes wife went home after she join the "TATArIN".......

  40. In the story of Nick Joaquin entitled Summer Solstice, I learn that not all girls are under the boys. It is because base on the story, the main character which is Don Paing vowed to his wife Dona Luping during the celebration of the Saints John Day. At first Dona Luping was only a puppy of Don Paing. The story was reflected to the life of Nick Joaquin because he is very particular with the girls. Most of his story is very dramatic.

  41. Nick Joaquin is really fun of superstitious events considering that there are scenes in his stories especially in the "summer solstice" that are really far from reality. It involved scenes that are out of control and done harshly,I like the way it was presented because in a single way it teaches us lessons. Like "the man should not always think of being superior to his wife but rather treat her as important as his life". In the summer solstice there is a revenge of a wife to her husband because of not being a good man to her. I like the part when Doña Lupeng let her husband crawl like an agonize lizard and kissed her feet because it was the time that Don Paeng must pay those hardships that his partner encountered living beside him. The characters are really weird, but I like the way the story ends because woman become the superior to her husband. It seems that in spite of those sufferings, woman finally won the game!!!
