Amador T. Daguio - The Wedding Dance

  1. The story of "The Wedding Dance" is quiet related to what is happening in our society today about the situation of a couple who has a problem in having a baby. Having a baby is a dream of a couple because it brings happiness to them as a gift from God. It is really painful in the part of the real wife in the story when she let her husband to find another woman just to have a baby. It is not really easy to accept it because it is hard to let go a person especially when you really love that person. In the last part of the story, I can really feel the agony of the wife which is being left behind while her husband celebrates his wedding. I realized that in a one couple the baby is really important to build up and maintain the good relationship between them. If they cannot produce one must sacrifice in order to satisfy the man's desire, a baby.

    1. Can I ask a question

I . How successful was Amador Daguio in coming up with authentic characters and their culture in the story? Is there any functional conflict in the story related to a particular belief in the Cordillera?

      2. How do the beans, the beads, and the spear contribute to the story? What do they represent in the life of the couple as well as the tribe?

      3. Comment in-depth on the nature of the nature of the relationship between Awiyao and Lumnay as "temporary couple. l' As member of the tribe, they must have a child to seal their marriage; otherwise, both of them will go back to the 'wedding dance' to find another mate. Is this sensible? How did Lumnay and Awiyao accept their fate?

      4. From your own point of view, describe the pain of losing your love one. Would you feel the same way Lumnay felt when Awiyao asked for a second chance?

5.Justify the final sentence of the story: "Lumnay's fingers moved a long, long time among the growing bean pods."

  2. Thanks to Amador T. Daguio, the author of the "Wedding Dance" that he give much emphasis on the wedding dance where it is the highlight of the story which speaks about the reality of marriage between man and woman. It is a reality that man needs to have a child to prove that his a true man. I can also say that man is superior at the story which is mostly present nowadays. Culture may also influence the mind of man just like Awiyao who married another woman who is Madulimay inorder to have a child because in their culture man cannot be called man if he doesn't have any child. Though Awiyao is not inlove with Madulimay, he still continued to marry her. The story doesn't care about the feelings of a woman rather cares for the good of man. Unequal treatment is portrayed. Now I realized as a woman that I have the right to fight for what I thought is good. Women who will be reading this will be motivated enough to do what is best for them. They will not be anymore coward towards men.

  3. I saw how a man being dominant in this story. In fact, I am not favorable to the main character because he think that he is more powerful than to the women,he think also that freedom is on his hand that he can do of whatever he wants. He is free to make a decision not knowing that there are people who get hurt,he doesn't considered about the feelings of his wife.Actually, everyone needs love and love is involve in this story.I am disagree according to the story that if a man does not have a son he is considered to be inferior to others in their community and he is not considered as a man.But like other said...love is love,no matter what happen,if you really love each other you can accept your partner's with all of your heart, you dont need to find a better one, what you can do,just simply accept her/his of who is she/he and what she/he had...that's we call love.Because some of us always look for the best, and when we finally see it,we take it for granted because we are expecting to find a better one,but we do not know that it was the best, and i think it is the best moral lesson I've learned in the story.

  4. "The Wedding Dance" by Amador Daguio is somehow about the reality of the obstacles encountered in a married life. Marrying someone you love is a dream anybody could long for. Engaging, accepting, and entrusting one's self in this status is a lifetime commitment. Therefore, it is not right for a man to leave his wife and find another one because of the reason that they cannot bear a child. If you really love someone, you would venture to fight and sacrifice everything for him/her to conquer all.

  5. The Wedding Dance that was written by Amador T. Daguio is a very good story. I really like it, especially the part when Awiyao must leave his wife Lumnay, eventhough he loves her, just because she can't produce a child. In the story, I've realized something eventhough I already know this. There are people who does not always follow their heart, because sometimes for them there are more important things than the person they love and sometimes, they need to make sacrifices for that important thing.

  6. For me,as a man, it is my dream to have a child. As what i have observed in the story, many couples of our generation cannot produce a child. Because of that, problems occur and some of the couples break their commitment and find someone who can give their wants. As a human being, it's hard to accept if we can't produce a child because that's one of the wishes of a couple. But we must accept it and we know that there is no impossible in GOD.

  7. I was very thankful to God that I was given the chance to read the story entitled "The Wedding Dance".It made me realize that true love does not always have the happy ending, but rather it makes you feel empty and break your heart into pieces.Sometimes, you need to sacrifice and give up everything just to make your love one happy.Even how painful it is,you need to accept the truth because true love is niether selfish nor greedy.True love always gives a way and have the power to make all things right.

  8. I like the thought that the writer gave emphasis to the abandonment of men to women. In this sense, I am sure that readers will appreciate more the women and their sacrifices as being inferior in their society. The realization, that if a woman cannot produce a baby, she will be considered useless provoked me for its being unfair and disgusting. The story also portrayed how culture affects wedding and the bitter truth about inequality of the sexes which led women to suffer. It hurts knowing that their husbands chose their pride instead of their loved one just to be treated according to their wants in their society. Anyway, I’m still thankful that I was born in this new generation, everything is fair and I believe that God created women to be loved and to be respected not be slaved

  9. A story “Wedding Dance” that was proudly written by Amador T. Daguio is a kind of a tragic, sad love story. It shows abandonment of a partner for the sake of having a child to another woman. It’s a kind of patriarchal story that males are dominating and that their commands must be followed. Daguio wrote this story to make us understand the other country’s principles as what the story is emphasizing. Though it is a kind of a tragic way, still it is a reality, that somehow somewhere, men need a child and that will do everything even hurts and fails just to achieve that desire. Now, it’s time for us to decide whether it is good or not.

  10. Amador T.Daguio was regionalistic. He was focusing the tribe or culture.Like he showed in his story the "WEDDING DANCE" a love and sacrifice.Love because they need to sacrifice their love for each other in order to have what they love and what they want most in their lives. For the reason that Lumnay cannot produced a baby that's why Awiyao sacrifice his love and find anoter girl who can give him a baby in order to him to become a real man.

  11. The Wedding Dance. The story was good as well as to the writer because he gave emphasis to the abandonment of men to the women which is really happening in some places. And the only reason why he have to abandon his wife is that he will be inferior to other men. When i read the story it was stated there that women only produce a child. I realized that not all individual follow their heart instead they follow what is their brain even if they will sacrifice their own happiness. We also to have to accept what would be the decision of others.

  12. Amador T. Daguio in that story shows to us an example of a Filipino culture: the story narrates about a patriarchal society- wherein men dominates. For me, i can say that the story was sad in the sense that the two lovers were being departed because of their culture & tradition even if they love each other. At the same time the story was also unfair to us-girls in the sense that men could leave us anytime if his needs were not met. Like what happen to Lumnay in the story, Awiyao her husband leaves her because they could not bare a child. So, base on that, the only job of female in that story is to produce an offspring & if she can't do that her husband could leave her because it is against/does not base on their culture. Because base on their culture, if men cannot have a child he could be inferior to other men & for that reason we-women were being abandon!
Generally, in that story Amador T. Daguio is trying to tell us that one culture could affect one's feeling, decission and LIVING.

  13. The story mainly focusing on the beliefs or culture of the people in the society . It shows how a certain tradition can affect the relationship of the two married people. The patriarchal society was being shown , in which man dominates. I don't like it because in the story, women became useless if they can't give child to their partners. The feelings of the characters were not given high attentions. It is a very sad story considering that Awiyao must find another woman named Madulimay who can bear a child and leaving his wife who is Lumnay alone. The scenes are not boring and it can surely touch every readers heart

  14. Of the sentence,"when society norms dictates their future that Awiyao must marry he girl to have a child".It shows unfairness & selfishness for both hearts created as one, because their norms and beliefs forced them to do such, even if they were so madly in loved to each other.
The "Wedding Dance" of Amador T. Daguio, explained further the role of women in the society. Abandoned them when they cannot have a baby. Because in fact, the ultimate role of women in the society is to produce children. They believe that there's a god and their culture affects their rituals particularly, the wedding.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The story shows the realization of one's role in a society based on their culture especially the role of women. The role of women is just to produce an offspring. Men didn't give importance to the feelings of women.Just like Awiyao and Lumnay, a couple who loved each other but then Lumnay can't produce a child, Awiyao leave Lumnay even he loved her so much & find another lady to marry that can produce a child w/c Mandulimay. The story shows that culture really affects their rituals particularly in the wedding ritual, w/c is the reality. It shows unfair to the married women who can't produce son will be considered as an inferior!

  16. The story written by Amador T. Daguio which is entitled "The Wedding Dance" shows that the women in their society is only a bearer of baby which is true, and really happening in the reality. The story makes me realize that there is a possibility that the two person hated each other can live together for the sake of their child. this story was guided by the paragraph and every paragraph had an idea that relate to the proceeding paragraph, and make the ending very touchable. the wedding dance shows the author for being a regionalistic its because he more focus to the culture.I was very Proud to have an author named Amador T.Daguio.

  17. The story entitled "The Wedding Dance" portrays 4 important aspects of the society: patriarchy, superstition, culture and tradition. In a patriarchal system, the males make the laws and they rule the society. Also, because of the superstitions that they uphold, the people always tend to follow the will of their god.Patriarchy and superstition both contribute to the culture and tradition of the society. These cultures and traditions are ways of living that the members must respect and obey, even to the to the point that they must neglect their own feelings and emotions so as to be accepted to their society.

  18. The story made by Amador Daguio is based on abandonment that is why it's a sad story. It shows how hard to let go the one you love especially if you really loyal and love that person. The culture that they have affects their wedding because they were not able to produce a baby. The man force to marry other woman just to have a baby although deep inside it's hurt him too. They love each other but then it never last because the man in the story prefer to follow their culture instead of fighting for the love to his wife.

  19. As i observed the situation of the story, it demonstrate the moment of the past. The author use the emotional scenes in which the readers can relate, especially for those who have the same situation in his story. His characters bring emotional roles in every scenes, they get the attention of the readers to make an idea of what theme and message the story had. As the whole story say's that the moment of the past would never been erased as long as you can't forget that experience!!!!!!

  20. I don't like the story of the "wedding dance", because it is sad, and the theme is abandonment, which I avoid to write when I was writing my own story. In the Introduction, I was imagining that Lumnay is happy with her life together with his husband, but as the story goes by I understand the real flow , because I did not expect that it is a sad story, in the beginning. Amador T. Daguio, the author emphasize the life in the mountain, their tradition, which is the wedding dance, here the new married couple dance. He also emphasize the belief of the people in this place, because Amador is rationalistic, and this people believe that if you have no son, you are inferior to other man in your place, and you must marry again, and they believe also to their god which is Kabunian have plan. The last part of the story is where I like most, because Lumnay face the reality that her husband is not belong to her anymore, and realize that, if she kill herself it means that she accept she is lost.

  21. As I have understood the story entitled" the wedding dance" it shows inequality especially lumnay's side because she has surrender her love to awiyaw for the sake of their tradition. Awiyaw has to marry madulimay in order to produce a baby. It is really happening in our society that if the couple could not produce a baby there's a tendency that they will separate and marry another partner. Although they love each other they have to separate because they have to follow their tradition. Lastly, we should always remember that love and tradition should be treated equally.

  22. The Wedding Dance by Amador Daguio is all about the life of couple that affects their because of the culture that they have in their region. They love each other but the man decided to marry other woman for him to have a baby. It is quite unfair to his wife knowing that she love him so much but still he choose to follow their beliefs. The women in the story is being rejected by his husband and she really suffer because it's not easy for her to give up his love. Though the women try to do her best but still it's not enough to convince her husband and that is why the story based on abandonment.

  23. As I reflect on the story "The Wedding dance" it only shows that in there time that culture really controls the human even on his/her love life. It is not easy to contradict on what you feel for a person. You have to give up everything for the sake of the societies culture. Even if you love each other but you have to set aside it. Many people may consider it but most of all some people follow their feelings. Loving someone is such a nice feeling but if you need to give it up it just mean that you really love that person.

  24. It was a good story written by Amador Daguio "The Wedding Dance". It portraits the Love and Culture of the two person. Even if they love each other they sacrifice their love for the sake of their culture. It shows that they really love each other even if it is against their will. It really hurts that you have to give up the person just because of the culture in their place. I have learned in this story that even if you love that person you still have to consider your culture.

  25. "THE WEDDING DANCE" written by Amador Daguio is all about the life of couple that affects their because of the culture that they have in their region. It is a sad story, sacrificing there love for the sake of there traditional culture. Even the couple are truely love with each other, they set apart just to followed the culture they believe. We all know that in the couple there should be a sibling to complete a family. And that is the culture in there region if the girl cannot produce a baby, the boy should married other girl who can produce baby. Suddenly that culture affect to the life of the couple in the story. It's hurt but they need to followed.

  27. Wedding Dance is one of the work of our filipino writer Amador T. Daguio. It was a good story because it's all about love. This story tells about that there's inequality between the boy and girl. The main character of the story leave her first wife because she can't give him a baby. At that time a married man should have a baby inorder to get the property of thier family. The male is dominant in this story or "patriarchan" thats the reason why the boy wanted his wife to have a baby especially a baby boy.

  28. The short story entitled “The Wedding Dance” shows party which is a tradition or a ritual that need to be follow especially the situation of the story that happened to the three characters, Madulimay, Awiyao and Lumnay. It is difficult to the situation of Awiyao because he need to sacrifice his love for the reason he wanted to have a baby. Because Lumnay cannot produce a baby, Awiyao sets her free. It says that if you love that person, you must sacrifice.

  29. This story is all about a couple in which the girl can't bare a child. In there society the couple who don't have a child they called it inferior. That's why Awiyao must find another girl to marry again. The story can be related to the Maranao culture, of which Maranao people believe that if the couple cannot bare a child, the husband will be inferior in there community. In order to diminish the perception of becoming inferior in their community, the husband find way, and that way is to marry another woman. He did marry another woman believing, that girl can give him a child.

  30. The short story entitled "The Wedding Dance" gives emphasis and importance of having a child between married couple. It shows how a certain culture and tradition affects their lives. Just like in the moment when Awiyao left his beloved wife to find another girl who can give him a child. I was so touch in that scene because, they didn't gave importance to their feelings. The vital thing for a man is just to have a child which enable them to be a real man and not being inferior to other man. Moreover, this short story written by Amador Daguio is a very good story.

  31. The story talks about the man who ruled by a tradition in their tribe.Inspite of being in love with his wife which is lumnay he must marry another girl to bare a children because he can't bare a children in his first wife which is lumnay. The story were compose of culture, tradition and obeying their gods. This story can shows that even if you love the person you must let go him because you must prioritize first your tribe before your happiness. In this story which was written by Amador T. Daguio he explain the role of a men and a women. The reality of this story was the women were only to bare a children.

  32. In the story the wedding dance, the writer emphasized that tradition is very important. when Awiyao decided to marry another woman for his will to have a child which Lumnay can't give to him. Although marrying another girl is very hard for him, he can't do anything. He sacrifices his love to Lumnay for the sake of their tradition. In this story, man dominates towards women. There are no other uses of women except of the fact that they just producing babies. The writer shows the crucial role of women in the story "The Wedding Dance".

  33. Sometimes, we treasure a lot of emptiness and discouragement. A sad story written by Amador T.Daguio entitled THE WEDDING DANCE make me inspired in how to be contented and accept the real what I have and who I am. First and foremost I'm so wondered and curious of why does people not contented of what GOD given to them. They want themselves make perfect. Sometimes, we blame the situation we blame our partner in terms of our emptiness and in order to covered up we did a lot of things just to fulfill what we wanted too. We often forget the presence of GOD in terms of our emptiness and difficulties that we face of. Let's leave behind what we don't need to carry of grudges, sadness, pain, fear, bitterness, and regrets cause life is full of challenges but somehow it help us to be strong and determined.

  34. The story of the "wedding dance" by Amador Daguio, it was a good story and are happening in the philippines prticularly in the tribal group in some far away province. And also today at present this tradition was still existing before the wedding of the couple. Just like in the setting it is in the mountain where the tribe live.I really like the story particularly in the part of the story when Lumnay was left in their house and having some moment remembering her past with her husband when they live together. And when her husband notice that she did not attend the party, Awiyao went home and try to convince Lumnay to join with some other girls dancing. But Lumnay refuse and prefer to stay home rather than to join with them. That was so touching. And it really felt my heart.AS what i have reflect on that story, there are some aspect really affect their society, these are tradition, culture, and patriarchal system. And I think that these aspect really affect their wedding. Even though it is hurt but still they have no choice but to follow of their tradition are.

  35. The story is all about the couple who want to have a baby but the sad part was that the wife cant produce any. Because of that problem, Awiyao need to marry another girl whome he doesn't love. He sacrifices his feelings for Lumnay just to obey their tradition. The story emphasized the dominating power of males. The writer developed the idea of the role of females that they are inferior which led them to be under stimated.

  36. One of the saddest story that I have come to read was the story written by Amador Daguio entitled "The Wedding Dance". The story shows patriarchal society where in the man dominates just like in the Summer Solstice but in this case, the only role of women is to bare to a child. When Awiyao and his wife Lumnay realized that they can't have a child Awiyao has no choice but to marry another woman that has the ability to give him a child and Lumnay has no choice either but to accept the fact that her husband have to leave her in order to have a child. It also illustrates that their culture affects their life and way of living which is happening in real life and it could happen to us.

  37. I really appreciate what the author’s ideas and how he showed to us the moral of the story entitled "The Wedding Dance". The story gives an idea to us on how some tribes follow their culture in some way, one of that is the couple needed to have a child. The story gives the real scenario on one of the couple who don’t have a child and by that, the husband called an inferior to his own society. The story shows that the husband needed to find another girl to marry, he needed to leave his first wife in other to have a child, even though he still in love to his wife. In some couples it's natural because it is their culture but in some of couple it is not good and forbidden.

  38. The wedding dance story is all about sacrifices. In this story Awiyao was forced to marry another girl whom he didnt love .The writer shows the reality in life which is the importance of having babies. He picture out that Awiyao should follow their tradition.

  39. The story is all about love and it's nice. but I don't like what the main character did. He left his wife just because it can't give him a child. Instead he find someone he doesn't love but can bear a child. And what he did is I think unfair for the girl.

  40. As what I have observe this person is full of common sense and unique, it because he doesn't create things that is part of being loser. Also in the story entitled the wedding dance, actually this story is definitely true just like what happen as of now, full of Filipino people are looking new husband/wife it is because they cannot produce a baby in order to be happy with his/her own family. And also with the theme which is abandonment, the man in the story he left his wife it is because of their culture.

  42. The story of the wedding dance talks about costumes and traditions. It also talks about loving and letting go after i read the story, a lot of things came into my mind.I felt that it is very hard from choosing between love and personal gain.and mind bugling question popped into my mind,"is it really for a couple to have a child?"Us and old saying goes, loving someone is not just about what you can gain from him/her but rather filling the lapses on your relationship and accepting him/her no matter and whatever and whoever he/she is...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nothing is more difficult than to be put in a situation where you are made to choose between love and following your traditions. They say that without traditions, a person does not have his/her own identity; however, love is a very strong emotion that makes us want to follow our ways of life.
In the story The Wedding Dance, Awiyao has to marry another woman because he and Lumnay can not bear a child. It is quite unfair on the part of the first wife to be left just because of that reason, yet, customs SHOULD be followed and traditions must be done.
During those times, laws can never be changed nor can it be bent for the sake of saving someone from feeling the pain of being left by someone whom he/she loves.
One important gift that God has given us is the freedom of choice. The freedom to choose on what we want to do and how we do these things. It is but a shame that sometimes we easily decide on things without thinking about it twice or as many times as possible that we end up having regrets of the sudden decisions we have made. We can't always expect that the decisions we make are the right ones, thus, we must always think before we act and whatever the result of that decision may be, we must have the heart to accept it.

  44. I was partly disappointed with this story "The Wedding Dance"because true love does not exist. They gave more importance to what they believe rather to what they truly feel, or should i say they patronized their culture and beliefs most. Particularly when the time Awiyao was forced to marry another woman just to have a son for the satisfactory of his being a man. I was expecting that Awiyao chose to have no son just as they will still live together with the one he truly love which is Lumnay but i was wrong. And in the story, there is no equality treatment between man and woman were woman is just like a baby maker just the man got their name. Truly every couple wishes to have a son/daughter as evidence of their love but i also believe that patience is a virtue,If it is for you then it will be given. I do also believe that having one is not the real essence of being a man because in other cases there are so many boy have a son or given that chance to have one but they didn't take their responsibilities effectively as a father. on the contrary I admired most Lumnay which she was strong enough to give up the feeling just for Awiyao to become happy on the other part. It's really the Love that gives it all, nice Love Story but Sadly it ends with tears,I just realize that in reality it does not always ends with happiness especially when we are talking to "love"itself, sometimes we need to learn in accepting things, we need to sacrifice just for the happiness of others and be happy for them though it hurts on us. The story reflects Reality,Love and Patriarchal where Love VS Culture.
On the other hand, when we try look at it,the story explains of how being regionalistic the author "Amador T. Daguio" is. Because the story goes of how important their region to them in the story,so they dare to do such thing, together with their culture, traditions and beliefs. For me logically that is meant of being Regionalistic of Amador T. Daguio.
